ITS FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
ITS FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
It's alarming that over 65% of Nigeria's youth population lack understanding of how the Nigerian government operates, particularly the 3 tiers of government and their roles.
This knowledge gap hinders their ability to effectively direct their protests. The truth is, the bulk of governance responsibility lies with the 36 State Governors and 774 Local Governments.
The 3 arms of government share the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) monthly allocation based on percentages stipulated in the 1999 Constitution.
The allocation percentages are:
- Federal Government: 52.68%
- State Governments: 26.72%
- Local Governments: 20.60%
Understanding these roles and allocations is crucial for effective advocacy and governance.
Roles of the 3 Tiers of Government.
Federal Government:
- Responsible for national defense and security
- Foreign policy and international relations
- Regulation of interstate commerce and trade
- Management of national resources (e.g., petroleum, minerals)
- Provision of national infrastructure (e.g., highways, airports)
State Governments:
- Responsible for state-level infrastructure development (e.g., roads, hospitals)
- Education (primary, secondary, and tertiary)
- Healthcare services
- Agriculture and rural development
- Urban planning and development
Local Governments:
- Responsible for grassroots development and service delivery
- Primary education
- Healthcare services (primary and secondary)
- Sanitation and waste management
- Community development and social welfare programs
Pls kindly note: This does not excuse the failures of the Federal Government, but rather highlights the importance of understanding the roles and responsibilities of each tier of government to effectively address governance issues.
