The Harsh Reality- Being Called to the Bar Doesn't Guarantee Wealth.

 

The Call to Bar ceremony is a momentous occasion for young legal professionals in Nigeria, marking their transition from law students to licensed lawyers.

 The event is often filled with excitement, as friends and family gather to celebrate the new status of their loved ones. 

However, the irony lies in the fact that many young lawyers and their families mistakenly believe that this milestone is a guarantee of wealth creation and prestige.

The reality is that the legal profession is not as lucrative as it is often perceived to be. 

The existing law chambers typically employ lawyers based on excellence, experience, and network. 

As a result, many lawyers in Nigeria have had to venture into other professions to survive, engaging in activities such as debt recovery, property sales, company registration, and more.

In today's world, where artificial intelligence can provide legal services at a minimal fee, it's essential for newly called lawyers to adapt and evolve.

 My advice to them would be to bury their pride, seek new skills, engage in entrepreneurship, brush up on their talents, and be open to any opportunities that can help them pay their bills.

To the newly called lawyers, I say: celebrate your achievement without the expectation of instant wealth and prestige.

 Ask those who were called to the Bar a few years ago about the reality of the profession. 

Many parents take pride in saying, "My son or daughter is a lawyer," but it's crucial to understand that being called to the Bar is not a guarantee of financial success.

Instead, focus on developing a diverse set of skills, being entrepreneurial, and being open to opportunities. 

Only then can you truly thrive in this competitive profession.
